Rick Sanderson is a professional artist working in Bath, Somerset, for whom painting is "a celebration of life and all its layers, rhythms and relationships". Over the past five years, Rick has shown paintings with the Albany Gallery (Cardiff), Market House Gallery (Marazion) and the Steam Gallery (Beer). However, many people first discover his work at his Spring and Winter Open Studio events which provide the opportunity for visitors to chat informally about the inspiration behind the paintings and the processes that create them.
How do you know when a painting is finished? Why don't you ever work from photographs? What do you mean when you say that your paintings are visual music? These are just a few of the questions from visitors to Open Studio weekends as part of an engagement with the work.
A new Facebook page provides an additional way for people to engage with Rick about his paintings.
Rick comes from a background in humanistic psychology with an eclectic interest in mythology and Eastern philosophical ideas. Whilst continuing to paint, he is a trained therapist in the field of Gestalt Psychology rjsgestalt.co.uk.
Drawing trips to S.E.Asia and India in the late nineties, during which he made over 500 sketches, had a strong bearing on a body of work ranging from smaller pastels to large oils.
'Racing Horses Between The Lines' is an ongoing series begun in 2006 with impetus from drawings at race meetings in the West Country.
An important focus for painting in recent years has been frequent visits to Cornwall and the development of painting through Gestalt influence. This led to a 2010 solo exhibition in Cornwall, Travellers Tales.
Rick's work reflects his immersion in a breadth of experience of place and subject and response to the moment upon moment impact of events - 'I happen upon something and something happens upon me'. This evolution layers experience and memory in the retelling, in the music of paintings emerging out of the whole of the journey.
All paintings are shown with studio prices and are available direct from the artist. Many paintings are also now available as limited edition prints. Please telephone or email if you would like to view paintings at the house and studio outside of any exhibition periods or to order prints.
